A far late post but I have A TC set up with bull barrels in 7mm for light game hunt and a 357 mag for? (it came with the pistol when I bought it). Both have scopes and are a lot of fun to shoot. I have several sets of grips and a leather shoulder holster that works with a scope. Not a lot of TC people out there but when I take it to the range everyone is impressed.

I shoot TC too. I love my 44 mag. with 14 inch barrel. This is one of the best hunting rigs I have. I have killed several deer with it. The TC systems are really a great deal because of the options available, being able to switch from pistol to rifle. I got my first TC Contender back in the mid 70's a 222. I wish I still had it. I am looking a getting a 6 mm tcu now. Does any one have any experence with this round?

Hi GMJ, my cousin Gary has the 10 inch barrels. He likes them because they are easier to carry in a belt holster. They do handle well and shoot good with in their range. I am thinking of getting a 500 but just can't make up my mind. I would like to find someone with one that I could try out.

For me it is a personal opinion thing, to me if you start getting over 10-12" in barrel lenght you start to lose the "handgun" part of handgunning. My 10" 30-30 barrel will roll bowling pins at 200 yards (if I do my part). My 10" 357 Maxi is no slouch either in the accuracy department. Yes there are more efficient calibers, barrel lenghts out there, but if it aint broke don't fix it. Plus the shorter barrels carry good also.

You are right GMJ, a 14 inch barrel does take something away from it being a pistol. I would have to say it is a shot barrel carbine. The first ones I had were 10 barrel guns and they shoot fine. The very first was a 222, I wish I still had it. Some how when I got to shooting big guns I wanted all I could get. I don't think I can shoot the 14's any better than the 10's. Have you shot and Encore pistol yet? I am thinking of getting a 500 SW.

Rangersr71, no have not shot the encore yet. From what I read they are good guns capable of of handling a wide variety of calibers. I do not think their triggers are adjustable as on the older contenders (memory???). So I guess I am kind of stuck (personal opinion) Contender short barrel (pistol) vs Encore long barrel (chopped rifle). I know a lot of people don't think the 30-30 is a big caliber but in a 10" barrel it is. In the back of my mind (that is scary) I keep hearing 445 Super Mag. calling my name, even when I look through my reloading manuals I always look at that cartridge.

GM, you are right about the triggers. I have and Encore rifle and the trigger is not near as good on it as it is on the 2 contenders I have. Unlike Remington bolt rifles and others you just can't adjust some screws to liten up the trigger pull on the Encores. I have found you must disasimble the frame and replace the trigger spring. Not a hard job but more expensive. The contenders have a lot better tiggers. I have looked at just about all the big calibers and I like them all.

My barrels are only 8" (in 7mm and 357 mag) but they are bull barrels so I make up the lenght in grith? I think I used that logic in another area of life but I digress.... I rarely shoot the 357 but the 7mm I hunt Mule deer with and have taken a six point buck at 80 yards with it using a simons 8X scope. At the range using a rest I can put ten rounds in a 2" center at 100 yards. I live in the NW and when hunting there few shots will be taken more than 70 yards due to the terain and trees. I like hunting with contender because I can carry it in a shoulder holster and it more like going on a hike until I spot a deer.

What distance are you shooting at when it keyholes? Dose it do the same at a shorter distance? You might want to try a hotter load or a lighter bullet. I expect the barrel has plenty of twist but depending on age/use it might be worn. Most .223 rounds are made for a 16"-20" barrel so shooting a 10" barrel may not give you enough spin when using low to mid grade ammo. I hope my rambling offers some ideas
